MasterFormat provides a Master List of Numbers and Titles for organizing information about construction requirements, product and activities into a standard sequence. It fulfills the construction industry's need for a common language and system to organize, standardize, retrieve, communicate, and exchange construction information. Since it was introduced in 1963, the 16 - Division Format has been widely accepted as Standard Practice in the U. S and Canada.

CSI India has developed a strategy for the adoption of Masterformat in India. The Project Master Format involves 3 phases

1. Organise a national level study
2. Organise a national level seminar and finalize recommendations.
3. Organise implementations.
